928 Info

When Porsche presented this car in 1977, the intention was that it had to succeed the 911. The buyers thought differently, they continued to buy the 911 in large numbers, and the expected large success of the 928 never came.
Still the 928 has remained in production until 1995 and a total of about 61,000 cars were produced in Zuffenhausen. In the Netherlands there now still about 600 licensed.
The 928 high-speed sport coupe has been built in a particular manner. The engine is a aluminum V8, the gearbox is mounted above the rear axle. The hood, fenders and doors are of aluminum. The chassis/bodywork is completely galvanized. So rust is no issue for the now aging 928. Furthermore "everything is electrically operated", an automatic climate control is present, the complete interior is in leather. That it’s a technical complex vehicle is becomes clear from the fact that there are over 1000 connectors and 3 kilometers of electrical wiring in the car.
The Porsche 928 is the only sports car which ever (in 1978) won the "car of the year" title. It’s the first car with standard ABS (as from model year 1986).
With a standard 928 GTS it broke the 24 hours speed record. The car was driven simply from Austria to the race circuit in Nardo, Italy. Here the car was driven for24 hours and set back 6377.25 kilometers, with an average speed of 265.72 km per hour. After this spectacular ride, accomplished by 4 Austrians on the initiative of private of the Franz Doppler, the Porsche 928 GTS was simply driven back to Austria.
